I did it again, I rented a movie recently that I had previously rented in September! Although when I picked it up at T's request and frustration of all the PG13 movies I had watched without him, I did think I had already watched the movie. Unfortunately it was a movie I gave 1.5 out of 5 stars. Oh well, I am running thin on movies to rent as of late.
I am not a big Jim Carey fan. I admit I have probably watched a great majority of his movies, but not with great enthusiasm. The other day I rented, "I Love You Phillip Morris".
This movie exacerbates the importance of details and expectations. Granted, I didn't have high expectations and I couldn't recall what the description summary on the box had been. During the opening credits I was half paying attention while playing a game of spades online. I saw the actors and then I saw, "It really did." in the clouds of the opening. I wondered what really did. I considered rewinding the DVD to see what I missed in that split moment and decided it probably wasn't important.
Fifteen minutes into the movie, I had had enough. While I am not homophobic, something about Jim Carey screaming out his desire to be a "FAGGOT" was almost revolting. His prancing and parading his new gay life from his quiet suburban married life was all too much for me to find entertaining. But...I didn't turn the movie off. I proceeded to watch the whole movie. At the end of the movie, I read the closing text about Phillip Morris and Steve Russo.
The movie was based on FACT.
My favorite type of movie. I was amused by the ending. I watched the section of the DVD on the making of the movie. I wished that I had taken the moment to rewind the movie to realize that the movie was real and it happened. It really did.
What a different perspective I have on the movie knowing that it was based on true events. That Jim Carey portrayed Steven Russo, a con-man who is serving time in prison with his earliest release of 2140. Who knew that one second of a movie would have such an impact?

Monday Moving Muse
I haven't blogged about movies on a Monday since April 2008! Lately I haven't had much luck in movies, well lately meaning the greater part of the past two years. Saturday T and I went and saw Unstoppable at the theater and I found myself on the edge of my seat. Of course, I am a huge fan of movies based on actual events. T really enjoyed the movie as well and was googling to find out the actual details of the runaway train 777, with little success.
I am really hoping that my luck in movies has changed. Tonight I picked up Going the Distance, Knight and Day, and Eat, Pray, Love. I wanted to see all three movies at the theater but never got around to it.
If nothing else, maybe I can manage to stay awake and actually watch all three movies from beginning to end without falling asleep or turning it off! Baby steps...

Shark vs. Eagle
Saturday in my attempt of being low key and regaining full consciousness and sobriety, I attempted to watch one of my latest blockbuster rentals, Shark vs. Eagle.
I mustered through twenty minutes. Twenty Minutes. It was that bad.
However, on a side note, that twenty minute movie became a twenty minute conversation with MD over dinner. I couldn't stop laughing. He clearly couldn't fathom the absurdity of the movie. I guess I'm not really that good of a story teller afterall. So when we got home, I had to put in the movie to show it to him.
You see, in that first twenty minutes there was the hottest sex scene you will ever witness in an R rated movie. Seriously, it could have been XXX rated. OK, NOT. I'm seriously kidding. Don't get all excited and think that you have to go out and rent the movie. Long story short, the girl goes to an animal costume party as a shark to the boy's party, Eagle, whom she likes. They end up in his bedroom which is beyond awkward as he shows her all of his geeky, nerdy inventions that if he doesn't continue to make, he will die. He then sits on the bed and asks if she wants to kiss. Yes. He then asks if she wants to lay down to kiss. Yes. Mind you, all while she has a shark costume enveloping her entire body and head and he has on a big eagle head costume that has a beak across the center of his forehead! He then asks if she wants to have sex. Yep. He takes off his headdress, she continues to be in her costume. Thank god for safe sex - he turns away and attempt two of a condom is successful. He then mounts her, fully dressed under the covers while she lays there fully dressed in her shark costume, but had apparently pulled down her under garments. And then within minutes it was done. End of scene.
The movie didn't get any better...actually I think that was the highlight!

Movie Reviews
I've actually increased my movie watching as of late. I had debated canceling my Blockbuster online membership, but mainly out of being lazy and the cost of one movie rental of $4.99, I've kept it.
I can't say that I've watched any fabulous movies. Quite the contrary, with an array of mediocre movies. Movies which included The Last Word, Poker Night, and Swing Vote.
I just rented Doubt and Benjamin Button. I can't imagine when I'll find the 2 hours and 45 minutes to watch Benjamin Button, but I'll surely try.
Last night we watched Hotel for Dogs. I recall seeing the previews before it came to the theater and thought it looked cute, but with time passing since then I was since dreading another animated or worse yet talking animal movie.
Therefore, I was more than pleasantly surprised. We all enjoyed the movie. There were MANY times that we were all laughing out loud, which was much needed from my recent stresses! Two paws up from these viewers!

Movies
I haven't watched many movies as of late. Last night JC and I watched Role Models. We watched the theatrical version and I can't imagine what the unrated version had to offer. We both enjoyed the movie and laughed a lot, although I'm very glad that I didn't allow my 12-year old son to watch it!
T and I attempted to watch Open Season 2 this morning. The DVD was so scratched up that we had a difficult time getting it to play. When we finally did, I fell asleep within the first 15 minutes. T became so frustrated with the skipping of the movie that after 50 minutes he turned it off.
Tonight T and I went and saw Knowing. T had been talking about seeing this movie for a month or two before it opened this weekend. I didn't know anything about it and don't recall seeing any of the previews either. I was more than pleasantly surprised during the movie. T and I both jumped a few times during the movie. I wasn't exactly thrilled with the ending, but we both found the movie to be engaging and entertaining.

Rails & Ties Movie
Tonight my son and I watched the movie, Rails & Ties with Kevin Bacon. I picked it up at Blockbuster since I liked the storyline description and it was PG-13 if my son and I had time to watch it. We had watched Penelope on Tuesday night and the other movie is due back Friday morning. I didn't have a chance to watch it last night as the hotel t.v. wasn't DVD compatible - hate that!
The movie was terrific. My son LOVED it! I can't remember the last time he raved so much about a movie. He gave it 4.5 of 5 star rating and was extremely disappointed that Blockbuster only gave it 3 stars.
Definitely a touching story about life, love and loss. And as my son says, a sad movie is always a good movie. Wonder where he gets that from?

Bella Movie Review
I haven't really updated my Blockbuster queue in a while. Hasn't been much of a reason since I haven't been that motivated to watch the movies sitting on my coffee table. I did finally surf through the newest releases thinking it would motivate me to want to watch something. It seems strange that 27 Dresses and PS I Love You are on DVD already. It seems like I just saw them at the theater!
I managed to add 1/2 dozen or so movies to the list. Nothing that was jump out loud must see movie, but some that I thought might keep me awake more than 20 minutes. I looked at Bella, but couldn't figure out if it was in English or not, especially since it won some Toronto award. So I bypassed adding it since I've had enough involuntary subtitles for a while.
Tonight as I walked around the store, I couldn't find a movie that I wanted to rent. Pretty sad, when it's been a few weeks since I have been in the store! I came back to Bella. I read and re-read (or as my brother use to say re-re) the cover. The message seemed inspirational and it said in English Dolby, so why not.
I was awake for this entire movie. I feel emotionally exhausted. I found myself crying and I can't even explain why. Maybe it was the connection of finding yourself unwed and unexpectedly pregnant. Yeah, maybe that was it! The intensity of the family dynamics and selfless love far outweighed reading subtitles of the family conversations. I really did enjoy the movie although I have to admit that I found myself wanting to call the soccer ball "Wilson". Comon, it was the beard!
I just went and read the member reviews, and honestly am glad that I didn't read them before hand as I may have been disappointed. Overall, I did find the movie quite enjoyable. Obviously if you are looking for something fast paced or action packed, keep looking.

Movie Issues
I seriously wish I could rent a movie that could keep my attention more than 20 minutes. I seem to successfully be falling asleep within the first 20 minutes of most movies these days. What is up with that? Clearly, anyone with great movie suggestions, let me know!
I haven't been to fond of anything on my Blockbuster.com list. I've had three movies sitting around for almost a week, so decided maybe I should watch them. Last night, I was pretty tired and emotionally drained after finally getting the airfare taken care of for Grenada. So, I knew if something didn't captivate my attention, I was in trouble.
Seriously. What is up with movies in foreign languages that are not really publicized as such? I don't know how many times now, I have rented a movie to turn it on and realize it is not in English. I'm all for subtitles, when I want them. I rented the Orphanage. I had even picked it up in the store and NEVER noticed it was in Spanish. Obviously, staying awake reading subtitles didn't work for me. I did manage to see the beginning 30 minutes and picked it back up about 20 minutes later and then caught the end. Nice.
Then today threw in the PG-13 movie, Dirty Laundry. I couldn't tell you what this was about. I fell asleep about 20 minutes into it. I don't think I slept for longer than 5-10 minutes but long enough to feel like I missed something, but didn't. Then I gave up, but my son wanted to keep watching it as I went to do something else. 50 minutes into the movie, he turned it off too, saying it was BAD. And that it had nothing to do with Dirty Laundry! Too funny!

Monday Movie Muse
I really think that I should give up blogging about movies. Lately it seems like a chore to try to stay awake beyond the first 20 minutes of any movie. Movies that I hear are good, haven't held my interest. Others that are dumb, I find mildly entertaining. Maybe I'm beginning to actually enjoy the slapstick dumb humor, but I have not and will not succumb to watching another Harold and Kumar movie. It seems like the rental movies are slim pickings and I know that it isn't because I've seen them all. Finding a good PG or PG13 movie is getting almost impossible. Anyway - here's the week in review:
Charlie Wilson's War: I tried, really tried to get through this one. I just couldn't do it, despite really liking Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks. But don't not rent it on my account, because clearly it got the best ratings on Blockbuster.com then any movie I saw this week.
Lars and the Real Girl: Now this movie made me laugh and by the end it almost pulled on my heart strings. Maybe it's pulling out the reality of disillusionment or maybe, I just liked it in that weird and bizarre kind of way. Not saying that I would recommend it, but...
Juno: It was OK. I think I saw too many previews and heard too much about it to really find it that intriguing or interesting. Maybe I just really wasn't able to relate to it on many levels, it just seemed like it was lacking. Again not to say that many others didn't like it. (Hence this is why I'm beginning to think that this blog has absolutely no merit or value whatsoever - because clearly the critics loved it!)
Moving McAllister: This was a third walk around Blockbuster pick. Had never heard of it, but little to choose from to watch with my son. And, I actually enjoyed it. Maybe it's the underdogs I prefer best. Not that I would race out and buy it, but it made me laugh and scream and almost cry. Needless to say the plot was extremely far-fetched but the brief comedic moments actually kept me entertained and more importantly, awake.
Awake: Seriously, this was by far one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It actually made me think that maybe there is hope yet for my movie rental abilities. Jessica Alba did a wonderful job. I was pretty creeped out through most of the movie - as it is mainly done from an operating room and blood and needles really isn't my thing. So my nails were in my mouth much of the movie as I sat perched on the edge of the couch. I would definitely recommend this movie.

Monday Movie Muse
Managing to watch movies has been really difficult - to not only find the time, but to stay awake! Seeing that Blockbuster is now charging $4.99 per movie, it doesn't make sense to cancel my online subscription because maybe some day in the near future, I may again have time or desire to watch something!
My Kid Can Paint That - I actually found this to be rather interesting, a documentary movie about Marla and her 4y.o. painting abilities which were later questioned. I think I may have enjoyed the deleted scenes and outtakes a little more than the movie. Regardless, I'm not an artist and if someone had "advised" me on what to paint, there is no way that my stick figures would look any better!
The Quiet Room - No idea how I managed to sit through this movie. I thought it would be a good movie to watch with my son being PG and about a 7y.o. girl who refuses to talk as her parents marital relationship dissolves. It was rough and the ending didn't make it any more worthwhile.
No Country For Old Men - My girlfriend and her husband watched this and said they hated the ending, so I wasn't eager to see it for myself. I did attempt to watch it tonight and seeing that I couldn't get wrapped up into during the first 1/2 hour figured no sense in continuing to find a disappointing ending.

Monday Movie Muse
Ok, so only because it's Monday am I posting this at all (seriously I'm procrastinating looking at my 791 pictures that I just uploaded as it seems to overwhelming right now). Over the past two weeks my movie watching has been almost nil. I did however manage to see parts if not most of the following while in the air:
Alvin & The Chipmunks: I wouldn't have ever watched this, but Travis the cute guy next to me on the plane said he found it quite enjoyable. So while he slept - seeing that it was on 3x - I did watch some of it. I have to admit, it was better than I thought despite I have never been an Alvin and the chipmunk fan.
The Great Debaters: I caught the middle and end of this movie. I really did like it and found myself in between two passengers (fortunately each a seat away), wiping away my joyous tears at the end.
The Savages: The reviews before the showing of this made it sound like a very promising movie. I wasn't impressed, although maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. I wasn't fond of the actors and didn't find the sibling relationship very captivating.

Monday Movie Muse
Movies in review, this was a pretty quiet week for movies, with family being the major theme.
Enchanted: Enjoyed this movie. Cute movie of sleeping beauty, Cinderella modern age all rolled into one. Of course my favorite character was chipmunk Pip.
The Seeker: I can't say I made it though this movie, as sleep became me. BUT, my son said it was OK although he wasn't thrilled with the ending. He preferred Water Horse more.
Water Horse: Really enjoyed this movie. Laughed, cried (so as my son says, it must have been good!), definitely recommend it for family viewing.
Rendition: Only adult movie of the week. I like Reese Witherspoon, but not sure that this movie did much for me. Took me three attempts to get through the entire movie and I was disappointed with the ending. I know others that really liked it. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for a torture flick, afterall I would rent Hostel again if I was.

Monday Movie Muse
It is technically Monday...so here it is...my first Monday Movie Muse. Obviously I'm not a serious movie critic and my movie viewing this week was pretty low so here goes:
SHUTTER - Pasey from Dawson's Creek, oh how it's hard to move on to new characters...movie was OK. Wouldn't recommend it. Wasn't scary although a few other movie goers screamed once or twice. Beautiful people gone bad. Best part for me...the ending (and not because it was over!).
CAROLINA - Julia Stiles: Had never heard of it before but LOVE her. Caught it on t.v. and managed to watch almost all of it despite the commercials! Would have preferred it on DVD. Love the southern quirky family - reminded me of home and although predictable...still feel good movie.
AUGUST RUSH - LOVED THIS MOVIE! Predictable but a definite feel good movie. Keri Russell (Felicity), another one of my favorites. Great music, cute story! My son even liked it although he had a hard time understanding the beginning.
POOR BOY'S GAME - Sigh...um what to say. Maybe I shouldn't have been multi-tasking so much with the movie, cards and working out. Good message/ending, although found myself zoning out and wishing I were in bed - although likely had nothing to do with the movie...maybe.
SHUTTER - Pasey from Dawson's Creek, oh how it's hard to move on to new characters...movie was OK. Wouldn't recommend it. Wasn't scary although a few other movie goers screamed once or twice. Beautiful people gone bad. Best part for me...the ending (and not because it was over!).
CAROLINA - Julia Stiles: Had never heard of it before but LOVE her. Caught it on t.v. and managed to watch almost all of it despite the commercials! Would have preferred it on DVD. Love the southern quirky family - reminded me of home and although predictable...still feel good movie.
AUGUST RUSH - LOVED THIS MOVIE! Predictable but a definite feel good movie. Keri Russell (Felicity), another one of my favorites. Great music, cute story! My son even liked it although he had a hard time understanding the beginning.
POOR BOY'S GAME - Sigh...um what to say. Maybe I shouldn't have been multi-tasking so much with the movie, cards and working out. Good message/ending, although found myself zoning out and wishing I were in bed - although likely had nothing to do with the movie...maybe.

Short posts & Monday Movie Muse
I find it most difficult to make short posts. I think if my mind wasn't always going 100 miles a minute and if I were a poor typist, that would be a different story! In the past few days I have had a friend and family member comment on how long these posts are. I guess I just don't know when to stop! ;)
I've decided to make a weekly Monday Movie Muse post - where I will review the movies I have watched the past week. Seeing that I'm always looking for good movies to rent or what not to rent, maybe you are too! And with as crazy as things have been for me - these should be extremely short posts!
